A study was done on dogs reacting in advance to their owners coming home. The studies mixed up return times, even days later than normal. Cameras caught the reaction (so no indoor human cues). And dogs would react happily to their returning owners, even when they were 10 minutes away. So the study ruled out hearing the particular car. It wasn't 100% of the time, but significantly more than random. So that means there's some other bond.

He has excellent hearing. That's probably the biggest factor in his sensing Sasha.

Animals are far more intelligent than most people know or are willing to believe. Their other senses are better then humans too. And yes they can sense things that are beyond human ability or comprehension. I had two twin male cats. They always knew I was coming in when my car pulled up in the driveway.
