Messi doesn’t like having his claws trimmed, just like any cat, but he doesn’t react as badly as most cats do! He’s such a gentle giant! (Even though he is pretty small for a cougar due to health problems.)

Well, some of his bones are shorter/smaller than those of most cougars but I suspect the overall weight is about the same! (Have a look at some video of wild pumas and they aren't are _robustly_ built as Messi.)

If I'm not mistaken, those health issues were related to his kidneys but he is doing great especially with Masha and Sasha's love and care.

There's a lesson for all pet owners and perhaps also parents of small children here: Don't treat things like nail trimming (or giving pills or a variety of other jobs) as something that has to be done assembly-line fashion. Do a little and then stop and comfort or distract and then do a little more. Yes, it takes longer but there are a lot less tears and there is a lot less blood.
