I think they may be playing. All animals seem to like the chase game. Universal type of play. Even animals of different species will play together in this way. We have lots of wildlife where I live and I have watched a young deer and a fox play this way together. I think this chase between Messi and Gerda is the start of signaling that both cats want to play. Especially since Gerda is allowing Messi to be the chaser. She is clearly faster than Messi, but allows him to nearly catch up. Smart girl. Usually Messi acts fearful when he runs from Gerda. Hope the new year will bring them closer. Having a play companion wood enrich both of their lives. Happy 2023 to you and the cats!
